Meet The Nigerian Laolu Senbanjo Behind Beyonce’s Body Art For New Album “Lemonade”
Beyonce or Queen Bee as she’s fondly called debuted her 2nd visual album titled “Lemonade” on HBO Saturday,23rd of April, 2015. The album came as a surprise as it wasn’t expected. The video album contains spoken word, fashion and lots of lyrics about relationships, infidelity, empowerment and love. “Lemonade” was an ode to black women, and a deeply personal story. Beyonce shared home movies of her father, her wedding to rapper Jay Z, her pregnancy and daughter Blue Ivy’s birthday party.
The visual album has body art designs on Beyonce and her dancers which where done by a Nigerian man based in Brooklyn USA. His name is Laolu Senbanjo a body art painter who calls his art Sacred art of Ori, which he originates his practice to Spiritual Yoruba Ritual. In his words
“In my language, Yoruba ‘Ori’ literally means your essence, your soul, your destiny”, Laolu explains further in his art statement “When I work with a muse, the muse, their Ori, and I become one. It’s the deepest, most spiritual experience I’ve ever had with my art as an artist.”
Laolu was featured on Fader Magazine where his artwork was explained in details in the Lemonade visual which was recently premiered. In the monochrome section of the video titled “Apathy“, Beyoncé’s background dancers are seen wearing intricate white body paint while riding in a metal bus and moving to the album’s fourth track, “Sorry.” Beyonce is also seen later in the video with a small amount of body art
